The main festivals in Ayalur are :

  • Ratholsavam
  • Vela Maholsavam.

Ratholsavam is being celebrated in the malayalam month of Dhanu (Dec-Jan) on the Thiruvathira day and
Vela Maholsavam on 2nd of malayalam month Medam (April). Ratholsavam is for Lord Akhileswara and Vela Maholsavam is for Goddess Kurumba Bhagavathy.

Apart from this following festivals also are celebrated :

ARATTU:

This festival is for Lord Akhileswara during malayalam month Thulam (Oct.-Nov.). On that day, Lord Siva will be taken to the river for manjal neerattu. Only on this occasion Lord Akhileswara will be taken out of the temple complex. Sreebhoothabali is also a main function on that day.

VAIKKATTHASHTAMI:

On this day Poornabhishekam with japams viz.mahanyasam, rudram, chamakam and sookthams will be performed to Lord Akhileswara early morning. The function starts about3.00 a.m. and ends 6.30 am. This falls on theKrishna Ashtami day of Malayalam month Vruschikam (Nov.-Dec.).

KRISHNA JAYANTHI:

This festival is celebrated to Lord Parthasarathy on Sukla Ashtami/Rohini day in the month of Chingam (Aug.-Sept.). Next day URIYADI maholsavam will be celebrated.

NAVARATHRI:

This is one of the important festival in Ayalur in Lord Parthasarathy temple. The festival starts on Sukla Prathama day of Malayalam month Kanni (Sept.-Oct.) and ends on Sukla dasami day. The festival is for 10 days and each day is named as first vilakku, second vilakku and so on. This festival is being celebrated by sponsoring each street. That is why the streets are named as 1st lamp street etc. In olden days, this festival was celebrated in a grand manner when all Brahmin families were in Ayalur. Of course now also the festival is celebrated by the available brahmin families. In addition Non-resident Ayalurians also sending money towards their contribution for this festival.

Morning Dhara to Lord Akhileswara and Navakam (nine kalasams) with japams(rudram, chamakam, sukthams etc) followed by abhishekams to Lord Parthasarathy with variety of dravyams, deeparathana etc , evening deepaaradhana in both temples with niramala & chuttu vilakku and in the night around 9'0 clock.vedaparayanam. etc will be performed daily during navarathri festival days. Apart from this, daily evening, LORD PARTHASARATHY(ulsava moorthy) will be kept in the specially decorated mandapam called KOLU. In olden days, upanyasams were also performed by famous Rama Sastry etc. daily in the night in between 9.00 p.m. and 11.30 p.m. Now-a-days, only Veda Parayanams are conducted in the night. On the Dasami day, Lord Parthasarathy will be taken out in a small decorated RATHAM through all streets in the agraharams and all the available people on that day are lucky to worship their God in front of their houses.

RATHOLSAVAM:

This festival falls in the month of Dhanu (Dec.-Jan.). This is celebrated for three days. First day Udayasthamana Pooja is performed to Lord Parthasarathy,second day Udayasthamana Pooja to Lord Akhileswara followed by in the night Makeera Vilakku and third day is Ratholsavam(Thiruvathira) day. Most of the people who left Ayalur used to assemble on this festival day to have Dharshan of their Gods (Grama Devathai)and also to meet their old friends. Procession by caprisoned five elephants with Panchari Melam, Pandi Melam,Panchavadhyam,Thayambaka,and special programs like Kathakali, Music etc. are important on this day apart from Radham Ezhunnallippu. On Thiruvathira day, ARUDHRA DHARISANAM is an important one. Poornabhishekam to Lord Akhileswara starts early morning at 3.00 am and concludes at 7.00 am with japam viz. Mahanyasam, Rudram, Chamakam, Suktham etc. Arudhra Dharisanam (Jothi Dharisanam-Maha Deeparadhana) will be around 5.30 a.m. Conducting this festival is the responsibility of Ayalur Grama Janam. This festival shows tamil-malayalam culture.

SIVARATHIRI:

This festival falls in the malayalam month of Kumbam (Feb.-Mar) on Krishna Chathurdasi day. This also an important festival to Lord Akhileswara. Poornabhishekam with Mahanyasam, Rudram, Chamakam, Suktham etc to Lord Akileswara will be performed on that day which starts at 9.00 pm. Anka Pradakshinam is the main offering of devotees on this day. Niramala with chuttu vilakku will add attraction in the evening before deepa aradhana.

VELA MAHOLSAVAM:

Vela Mahotasavam in Sri Kurumba Bagacathi temple is being celebrated every year on 2nd of Medam (15/16 April) month. Mahotasavam starts after hoisting flags (koorai poduthal) just 15 days before the Main festival. On 1st Medam, Goddess will be taken on procession to almost all places in ayalur village to give dharsan to them in the front of their house.

People will offer Nirapara to Goddess on this occasion. This day is also called as Kari Vela. On Vela Mahotsavam day, special abhishekam, pooja and deeparadhana will be performed in the forenoon. After deeparadhana, eedu vadi with more than 100 kathinas is very famous . Afternoon elephant procession with panchavadhyam and pandi melam will start from Siva temple and reach the Bagavathi temple at about 7 p.m. At that time fire works from Ariyakodu Desam is very famous.

In night, thayambaka, keli, kuzhal pattu, konbu pattu etc. will be perormed and after . that theelephant procession will commence again from Siva temple at 3.00 a.m. and conclude at Bagavathi temple at 8.00 a.m. Fire works in early morning also famous. After that temple will be closed for seven days. The festival will conclude with Kanyar Kali. Entire people in ayalur village is participating in this festival.
