Ayalur Village is situated in Palakkad District, Kerala State (South India). This village is having many ancient temples viz. Lord Akhileswara, Lord Parthasarathy, Goddess Kurumba bagavathy, Chekkadi Mariamman, Venkalathu Bagavathy and Purathana AyyappanKavu. All these temples have their own agricultural land and once all these temple activities were managed from the income of this agriculatural land. Daily poojas etc. of these temples were badly affected due to political change when the income from agriculture was stopped due to Kerala Land Reforms Act. Now all the festivals in these temples are managed from the collection from Devotees of Ayalur Village (either in Ayalur or elsewere in the world). Many devotees have come forward and renovated the old small temples viz. Kurumba Bagavathy Purathana Ayyappan Kavu, Chekkadi Mariamman & Venkalathu Bagavathy temples from time to time.

LORD AKHILESWARA TEMPLE:

This temple is more than 1000 years old. It is believed that the Siva Lingam in this temple was installed by Giant Kara. Giant Kara got three siva lingams, after his prolonged THAPAS, and he carried these Lingams one in his right hand, second in left hand and third one on the teeth. He installed the right hand Lingam at Ayalur, Left hand Lingam in Pallavur and the third one in Thrippalore. All these temples are situated within five kilometers. It was told by our forefathers that this temple was managed by Namboodiris.( Namboodiri women use to watch the god procession etc. from the first floor of front side of the temple. After Namboodiris, nobody is using this floor. Now the bottom portion is called Bajana Mandapam.) and then handed over to Maharaja of Cochin.

Initially temple roof was only covered by palm leaves. After a fire accident, the temple was renovated and roof was covered with tiles. It was told that this work was done only about 150 years bakc along with the construction of reading room inThalavattampara. . In olden days, Priests in this temple use to stay in the temple premises itself (top floor of the Gopuram) to observe Brahmacharyam. Now this temple is under the control of Cochin Devaswom. All festivals in this temple are being conducted by Ayalur Grama Janam. Grama Janam also is incurring expenditure on daily neivedyams.

Main festival in this temple is Car Festival on Thiruvathira day of Malayalam month Dhanu. Till this day, this felstival is being conducted by Ayalur Grama Janam. Earlier days, these festivals were conducted from the income of agriculture of Lord Parathasarathy temple. Our forefathers told that Maharaja of Cochin have conceded permission to conduct Car Festival by Ayalur Grama Janam. (Earlier one Olachuvati was available in this regard ). As per our forefather’s statement that Maharaja has conceded to give Rs.500-00 and 101 paras of paddy to conduct the Car Festival. Subsequently when the temple was taken over by Cochin Devaswom, this grant was reduced gradually and the present position is not known.
